Grampians for the weekend

Long time, no blog. But... we're back in action.

Last weekend, Rob and I went camping in Grampians National Park, Victoria. What a bummer that all mountain ranges in Australia are named after mountain ranges elsewhere in the world. These Grampians were named after the Grampians in Scotland.

These mountains are fabulous. Huge red sandstone beds tilted and deformed by a granite intrusion to the east, the area hosts some great rock climbing routes. But Rob and I spent the weekend hiking around, delighted by the plethora of kangaroos and wallabies that are hopping around the park. One particularly friendly wallaby tried to nab some food from our picnic table while we were sitting there! A pair of emus crossed the road in front of the car late one afternoon. Dusk is simply a terrible time to be driving on the roads. Especially in a tiny car that lacks a roo bar on the bonnet of the car.

We explored the natural caves in cliff walls, looking for aboriginal cave paintings hidden off the beaten path. But in the end, we only saw drawings at the Bunjil caves designated area. Bunjil is the Great Ancestor spirit of the Jardwadjali aboriginal people. Bunjil created the Jardwadjali people, animals, laws and customs.

A lovely summer weekend, all in all. Rob's back off to Queensland. Another 3 weeks 'til our next adventure.
